We are all used to the fact that due to being more green and environmentally friendly, we now have to pay for a plastic bag if we require one when shopping. Obviously this policy is essential to help reduce landfill, the plastic rubbish in the seas and the countryside. I think most people would agree that paying a nominal 5p per bag is a small price to pay to help preserve our planet for the generations to come but what would be the maximum you would pay for a plastic bag, 10p, 50p a £1? Well the French design house Celine has just brought out a limited edition clear plastic bag for no less than £425.00. However this is no ordinary plastic bag, this is a designer plastic bag.
As seen being modelled by various fashionistas at a number of fashion events recently and designed Celine’s creative director Phoebe Philo for their Spring/Summer 2018 collection, this clear plastic bag is being promoted to actually carry another bag or purse in. In fact you can buy a Celine small leather clutch in combination with the plastic bag for the princely sum of £720.00
In fairness to the bag, it is made with a thick durable PVC plastic so should last longer than just a couple of trips to the shop and obviously can be re-cycled. On the bag itself is the Celine logo and also the compulsory suffocation warnings in not 1 but 4 languages, English, French, German and Italian. Unfortunately the English version is not grammatically correct as it say’s “To avoid danger as suffocation keep away this bag from babies and children”. The idea of the bag is essentially to carry your belongings along with your handbag. I doubt very much that it will be used for the grocery shop at the local supermarket.
This is not the first time that a high end designer has created a bag that resembles closely an everyday cheap bag. Only last year Balenciaga famously designed a £1,425.00 blue nylon, shopper that looked just like a 25p Ikea shopping bag. The Celine bag is being marketed as a limited edition designer vinyl shopper but will it sell? Of course it will sell and become a must have bag of the season. If you want one you have until July to buy one but don’t forget your credit card even though you’ve left your brain at home.
This bag has caused a real stir in the industry so Celine may not be as daft as you think but as 1 Instagrammer said “It’s literally a plastic bag”
